Visual Acuity Systems from M&S Technologies, Inc.

M&S Technologies is a leader in computerized vision testing systems. With technology designed specifically to meet the needs of today's busy ophthalmology and optometry clinics.

Based on 16 years of vision testing of over 2,500 professional baseball players with the Professional Sports Vision Testing System (PSVTS) – it has proven to identify and analyze the five areas of vision that are critical in enabling superior performance in sports.

To compete on the optometric field – add the PSVTS to your equipment line up to increase your patient base and generate new revenues. You’ll become a player in the new business arena while offering your athletic patients the performance edge they’ve been searching for.

Since 1992 M&S Technologies has served ophthalmologists and optometrists, we invite you to Find it in Smart System!

EYE Check Sports Vision Testing™ and M&S Technologies™ are pleased to announce an exclusive partnership to deliver pioneering sports vision testing with the realiability and accuracy of the M&S Smart System Visual Acuity Systems. Dr. David Kirschen and Dr. Daniel Laby have tested thousands of professional athletes and this knowledge can help your patients succeed on the field.

Patient Driven Automated Testing This unique feature utilizes proprietary protocols which allow the test to be conducted by a technician within the exam room. This feature assures test to test repeatability, eliminates technician bias, flexibility to test in more than one location and obtain data that can be compared and analyzed by the system - with no need for interpretation by an eye care professional. The protocols runs seamlessly with optimum efficiency and consistent results are generated due to the specified testing conditions (i.e background lighting, testing distance, etc.)

5 Critical Testing Points in Evaluating Athletes

  • Visual acuity
  • Contrast sensitivity
  • Distance stereo
  • Reaction time
  • Hand/eye coordination
  • Contour and Random Dot Stereo Most stereo acuity tests are performed at a near testing distance which is not relevant for the athlete. Research has indicated that stereo acuity testing at distance is a critical measure of an athlete’s visual capability. In most athletes near stereo acuity is excellent. Distance stereo differentiates different levels of athletes and different abilities. In the case of random dot stereo testing, 18% of the general population score “superior” compared to 56% of professional athletes. Therefore, the results of this screening are more applicable to the more difficult tasks required in sports.

Letter and Sine Wave Contrast Both letter and sine grating contrast have been found to be a significant differentiator in a player’s performance. Whereas letter acuity testing accounts for a small part of the vision spectrum - contrast sensitivity testing is a more flexible test that allows for evaluation of a players vision in many different possible scenarios - from identifying the seams of a pitched ball to picking out a hockey puck against a background (e.g. the clouds or spectator clothing). It is one of the most significant tests that relates to on-field or arena performance.

Data Analysis and Reporting The results report gives the patient and the eye care professional a frame of reference......what really is excellent visual function? A determination of 20/20 vision is good by traditional standards, but in sports vision must be optimized; it is human nature to compare ourselves to others - and in sports, we like to compare ourselves to the professionals. The PSVTS analyzes and compares the visual results to known professional data which gives the eye care professional help in identifying areas that may need to be improved in order to maximize the visual function of the athlete. Overall performance in a sport likely will be improved by improving visual function.

New Revenue Stream Sports vision screening allows the eye care professional to add new patients to the practice in addition to offering more value added services to existing patients. Additionally, family members of the sports vision patient offer a unique opportunity to further increase the patient base. The opportunity for an increase in optical\contact lens sales as well as prescribing specific vision therapy can be an important addition in practice revenues. Finally, additional fees charged for data analysis can be significant.
