eETDRS™

The baseline for vision testing has always been the traditional ETDRS charts (see white paper American Journal of Ophthalmology, Vol. 116, #6, December 15, 1993). This letter set was developed by several prominent scientists within eye care to standardize vision testing for research, clinical trials and daily clinic use. Each letter throughout the chart would typically score the same due to its random position within each line.

The eETDRS™ concept was to develop a computerized method of visual acuity testing for clinic use as an alternative to the standard paper or plastic ETDRS charts.  Click this URL Link: http://www.ajo.com/article/S0002-9394%2802%2901825-1/abstract

Key Features of the Smart System® with Electronic ETDRS™

Approved for use in Clinical Trials
Smart System® EVA is approved for use in clinical trials by the JAEB center (Tampa, Florida) utilizing the eETDRS™ and ATS protocols. Designed and developed by industry professionals, the EVA system using the eETDRS™ protocol has become the standard in vision testing. The convenience of running eETDRS™ on the same computer system running Smart System® allows the practice to utilize the standard exam room to test trial subjects without having to roll in a big, bulky ETDRS cabinet.

Test Protocol
The subject simply verbalizes what is displayed on the monitor and the clinician simply selects “correct” or “incorrect”. Depending upon the clinician input, the algorithm advances to the next display and again the subject verbalizes what is displayed and so on. At test conclusion and through a complex series of steps the ETDRS numerical score along with a standard visual acuity score is displayed. Since this is computer algorithm based, technician error or bias is virtually eliminated allowing the score to be a true and accurate visual acuity and ETDRS score. The subject results can then be securely transmitted to any location or exported to a standard ASCII file, CSV spreadsheet or text file. The single greatest advantage is the repeatability and consistency from patient to patient and visit to visit.

Easy to use, efficient with repeatable results, the eETDRS™ protocol ships standard on each Smart System 20/20. The system can be selected and used via wireless remote control for clinic use or used to participate in clinical trials requiring traditional ETDRS scoring (additional hardware required).
